A Simulation Study of Proportional Rate Control for ATM Connectionless Servers

The deployment of connectionless servers is one potential method of providing datagram service over the connection oriented ATM networks. The performance of connectionless servers are heavily in uenced by two factors. The rst factor is the packet forwarding mode. A reassembly mode connectionless server reassembles datagrams from their constituent cells before routing and forwarding them to the next server. A streaming mode server calculates routes upon receipt of the rst cell of a datagram and forwards all cells as they arrive. The second factor is the ow control used between connectionless servers. Previous work by the authors have looked at a static rate based ow control scheme. Another possibility is a dynamic ow control scheme. This paper investigates the performance of streaming and reassembly mode connectionless servers utilizing the dynamic Proportional Rate Control Algorithm (PRCA) via simulations. It is shown that acceptable performance may be obtained by tuning the PRCA parameters.
